and still King - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley mannequin appears to be dancing with the person who works at the store in Nashville, Tennessee. This photo was taken in November, 2006.

Elvis Presley was born on this day in 1935. Two decades later, he would help shape a new world and a new style of music.

On Monday, we learned that the first image was transmitted to 25 cities "across the wire." This was the world that Elvis Presley knew. Just as you were born into a digital world, Elvis was born into a world that was changing. The older generation did not understand him. (Older generations rarely understand youth!)

His first album (and album cover) influenced music across the world. Twenty five years later, The Clash would release London Calling using Elvis Presley's debut album as inspiration for their cover.) Elvis was (and is) King.

My generation was not born into the digital age the same way that you were. We do not understand Facebook and the internet. We do not understand Instagram. We forget that album covers were square.

If us old folks forget, ask us,

What shape is an album cover? That's right. It's the same shape as most Instagram photos. (Squares existed before albums.)

Let the King influence your work today. Go shoot a photo that can be squared. Title your blog post "Squre." The photo should illustrate a burst of action about to happen, just as the Elvis cover and The Clash cover. (Is the pendulum about to swing again?)

Post one square photo. That's it.
